Laptop bags are a relatively new thing because (obviously!) there was no need for them before we had laptop computers. And that, seeing as you’re asking, all started about 40 years ago. The Grid Compass, made in 1982, was the first computer to feature the clamshell design, where the screen folds flat against the keyboard. At around US$10,000 (that’s the equivalent of about US$27,000 today) it didn’t exactly fly off the shelves. Did it have a laptop case? Yes, it did — a magnesium one. But if you wanted to carry it around you wouldn’t have got far, because it relied on mains power. How quickly things change! These days, many people choose laptops over desktops for their portability and convenience, and a total of 3.7 million were purchased in Australia in 2020.

Having something to carry your laptop around in is pretty well mandatory as it makes it easy to transport, looks stylish and, most importantly, keeps it safe from scratches, dings and dust in transit, and during periods of non-use at home. The laptop bag can claim superior status while travelling, too, as most airlines (including Qantas) consider laptop bags as a personal item, and therefore allow you to take them on board in addition to your carry-on baggage allowance. However! It must be carried in a slim bag (large laptop bags will be counted as part of your carry-on baggage), and must be presented at the security screening checkpoints.

What kind of laptop bags are there to choose from?

There are four main types of laptop bags: backpack, briefcase, laptop tote bag and portfolio/sleeve. All offer the same basic function — to hold minimum one laptop and its power cable.
Sleeves are most often made of cushioned neoprene, which provides a good grip for carrying, a soft berth for your laptop’s surface, and a bit of shock absorption in case it gets bumped. You can choose from a myriad colours and designs and starting at around $100, you can (maybe!) afford to have more than one to suit the occasion from formal to frivolous.

Backpacks are generally multipurpose and great for weekends away where you need to take your laptop with you. They come in both slim designs and bulkier options that have plenty of room for all your other stuff — handy if you need to carry paperwork or a camera or other work tools. And that way you have two hands free to talk on the phone and walk the dog at the same time.

A laptop tote bag or messenger bag is suitable for casual to formal occasions. Briefcase laptops may come with a carry strap so you can carry it like a satchel as well as by hand. Both are often made from classic leather in black, tan or natural. Leather is sturdy and durable, will go with everything and looks even better as it ages. If you don’t want animal skin but still like the luxurious look and feel of leather, check out the vegan leather options here at Hardtofind — made from eco-friendly, cruelty free synthetics or natural plant fibres.

What to look for in a laptop bag

First, make sure it’s the right size. That may sound obvious, but laptops vary from 11 to 17 inches and size matters — the difference between a 14-inch laptop case and a 15-inch laptop case could be crucial! You don’t want a case that gives the laptop room to move around, because that defeats the object. Padding is also something to look at, especially if you’re using it on the daily commute to work or college. If security is an issue, look at hidden pockets and zips for your valuables. And choose a durable construction and a waterproof lining that’s going to keep your laptop dry and snug when the weather lets you down. Got a lot to carry? Sleeves are great when it’s just you and your laptop, but if you need to carry around other accessories, such as USBs, notebooks, batteries, cables and a mouse, it's essential that your bag has plenty of pockets and separate compartments to suit. And make sure the carry straps are comfortable. Lastly, consider your personal style. Take time to decide what’s best for you. At Hardtofind we have a huge range of laptop bags and laptop cases, so have a browse and find the one you love. If you’re carrying your laptop bag arounds five days a week, it needs to be not only practical, but something that makes you feel happy whenever you pick it up.
