Rock the kasbah: how to get the Moroccan look

We don’t know about you, but whenever winter sets in we start fantasising about getaways to warm, exotic places. Today, we’re dreaming of Morocco – a land of mint tea and rosewater; of bustling souks and relaxing hammam spas; of hot desert winds and cool mountain air. We can almost smell the rich tagines served with steaming mounds of spiced cous cous as we converse with the colourful characters in Rick’s Café Américain.

But while we may not be able to escape to North Africa just yet, that doesn’t mean we can’t bring a little of Morocco to our home. Detail, texture, colours and geometry are the secrets to this luxurious style, from the pretty mosaics in mirrors and coffee tables, to the intricate carved designs in wooden furniture. While it may seem a little chaotic at first, once you embrace the cheerful contrasts, you’ll discover a bold style that excites the senses.

Get the Moroccan look

  • Forget minimalism! Fill every nook and cranny with soft furnishings, overstuffed cushions, ottomans and rugs. Comfort is key!
  • Repeat after us, “colours and patterns, colours and patterns.” You really can’t have too many in this style, though for an authentic look, keep the palette to whites, browns, ochres, creams, rusts, oranges, greens and blues.
  • Keep lighting soft. Candles are great for completing this look, while a cluster of low-hanging pendant lamps or lanterns will create a gentle, yet eye-catching feature even in the most vibrant space.
  • Geometric patterns are a main feature in Moroccan design, with shapes such as domes, arches and stars common subjects. Repeating motifs look particular spectacular on tiles and rugs.
  • Courtyards were traditionally the central feature of the home. Try adding colourful pottery, low bench seating, cool draped silks and plenty of cushions to your outdoor area to transform it into an exotic oasis.
  • Don’t forget the details – a beautiful tall silver teapot filled with mint tea will transport you straight to Marrakech.
