The Great Gatsby: opulence, excess and glamour

With Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated interpretation of The Great Gatsby hitting Australian shores tomorrow, we’ve been excited to see an emerging trend that pays homage to the glamorous era of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. A haunting tale of the American dream-turned-tragedy, Gatsby was the ultimate expression of the roaring ’20s: excess, decadence, and an emphasis on all things modern. From Art Deco’s symmetrical sunburst motifs to the feathers and fringing popularised by flapper girls, it’s a style that excites the senses – much like one of Jay Gatsby’s famous parties.

Living Room — While Art Deco was the dominant style of the era, those symmetrical, geometric designs work best when softened with textured fabrics, warm colours and pearls.

Lounge — Accessorise! We love the large floral detail, matching headband and statement bangles worn by Isla Fisher (as Myrtle Wilson). Don’t forget to add a touch of glamour to your home, too – a repeating wallpaper print makes a bold feature.

Cakes — “Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can!” – Men can recreate the 1920s look with a short haircut, sharp cufflinks, a pocket handkerchief and a well-tailored suit.

It’s all about excess! Don’t be afraid to go a little over-the-top with textured fabrics and statement jewels.
Bling is in. Accessorise with pearls, gemstones, tassels, silk scarves and feathers. Nothing says ‘glamour’ quite like a feather headpiece.
Ditch the paint and get wallpapering. If you can’t afford to wallpaper the whole room, just choose one feature wall for a striking effect.
Replicate that Art Deco look with pieces that feature repeating motifs – think fanned peacock feathers and geometric patterns.
For the guys, get the sharp look with cufflinks, a pocket handkerchief and a well-tailored suit.
Colours don’t need match but should still complement each other; in the right shade, pastel pink and green can work fabulously with bolder blacks and golds.
Don’t forget the drinks trolley for that cheeky prohibition-flouting mint julep or a Champagne brunch.
