Life on Marz
In just 3 short years, Sydney-based designer Coco Reynolds of Marz Designs turned her passion for beautiful forms into a concept with a cult following. Her timber bead light designs have been featured in Australia’s leading design publications including Real Living, Vogue Living and Belle, and are even a favourite of international styling superstar Abigail Ahern. Coco told us all about how jewellery making as a kid led her to creating these gorgeous, unique pieces.
How did you come up with the concept for your timber bead pendant lights?
I loved making jewellery as a child, threading beads onto string to make necklaces and other embellishments. In the same way, the lathed timber beads are designed to be assembled over the humble cord which is finished with a lightbulb, either as decoration or accessory. For me, my bright beads evoke a nostalgic playfulness.
What do you love about working with timber?
It’s natural, renewable, readily available and offers a variety of colours and patterns.
Which is your favourite product?
Last year, I designed a small desk fan made completely from American walnut. I really enjoy reconfiguring the conventional and making something utilitarian beautiful through good design and the unexpected use of materials.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I think the most satisfying moment is when that concept is realised, through a prototype or final production. It’s very exciting when you see your idea turned into something tangible.
What are some of the challenges?
The industry is incredibly hard work, the days are long and the projects can be difficult but at the end of the day it’s what I love to do and it’s also incredibly gratifying.
What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?
My iPhone. I wish it wasn’t so, but I’m lost without this amazing piece of technology.
What’s next for Marz Designs?
I’m currently working on a furniture range which incorporates work from a selection of inspiring and talented local Australian artists, graphic designers and photographers. The range will feature their works of art and I’m really excited to see how the project will evolve and resolve.
