From Paris with love: luxury costume jewellery

What is it about a statement piece of jewellery that can really make an outfit? Sure, it’s lovely to have special fine gold and silver pieces decorated with precious gems, but when you step out sporting a quirky necklace or rocking a cool oversized ring, even the plainest ensemble springs to eye-catching life. Which is why we’re very excited to introduce one of our newest sellers, Les Nereides. This French jewellery house creates unique, high-end costume jewellery which is both elegant and whimsical.

Les Nereides was founded in Nice in 1980 by husband-and-wife team Enzo and Pascale Amaddeo, and is now a family business with three of their children working for the company (the fourth is still a student). The jewellery is inspired by the treasures and symbols Enzo and Pascale have discovered during their travels and collecting, with all pieces designed in Paris, then made, painted and assembled by hand.

It’s this romantic style and attention to detail that has made Les Nereides a favourite among a number of celebrities. Singer Alecia Keys, French actress Frédérique Bell and movie star Emma Watson are among the brand’s fans – in fact, Watson insisted on wearing the jewellery in two of the Harry Potter films!

We caught up with Australian distributor Forooz Normoyle to find out the secret to Les Nereides’ appeal.

What sets Les Nereides apart from other jewellery?
It is highly contemporary, yet at the same time it is a romantic and very feminine brand. There is absolutely nothing like it in Australia! Every season, we have 10 to 12 entirely new collections, and they always manage to surprise and delight me. The jewellery has struck a chord with a number of Australian television presenters and a growing contingent of business women – it’s their secret weapon in a sea of suits.

What’s best part of your job?
I have the opportunity to introduce the brand to new customers, and also to meet so many who have experienced the brand overseas and are thrilled to find it available here in Australia.

Which is your favourite product?
I particularly like the ‘diamantine’ range in hand-faceted glass. It is elegant, super luxurious, and available in richly beautiful colours. I also like the ‘autumn fruits’ collection; these lovely pieces are simply luscious!

What’s your top fashion styling tip for winter 2013?
I like to balance my winter outfits with softer colours: pale pink and mint green are my favourites this season, adding a touch of softness and femininity.

French style is… being naturally sophisticated. That means: being stylish and elegant, but with a point of difference.
