Fashion for the modern professional woman

Looking both professional and stylish in the office can be a bit of a challenge, but Aussie clothing designer Leina Broughton knows exactly what working women need. We chatted to her about learning to sew, tips for picking an outfit and how she keeps it all 100% Australian made.

What ignited your passion for fashion?
When I was 12, my Mum decided to give me an allowance for clothing each new season. I quickly realised it didn’t cover what I wanted, so she taught me how to sew and the creations began! The more I learnt, the more I wanted to create.

What was the first piece of clothing you designed?
A very basic A-line denim skirt to which I added a topstitch pocket design to – I was so proud of myself!

What is the best part of your job?
I absolutely love what I do and feel very blessed, every day I come to the studio excited. From design development, marketing strategies and brainstorming with my partner-in-crime, Fleur Richardson, it’s ever evolving.

Talk us through the your creative process
Each collection starts with a sit-down session with Fleur and I working out release dates and what the ‘LB woman’ will be doing at that time, painting a picture of her life and then discussing what we are both being influenced by. Working on the “hook” pieces for each story and then expanding out to complete the range.

Why is it important to you that your garments are made in Australia?
One of the key selling points of LB is consistent quality, sizing and fit. Local production means we have a huge advantage with control in these areas. We are also incredibly lucky to have amazing manufacturers to work with here in Queensland.

What is your favourite Leina Broughton piece?
The ‘sleeved ballet circ dress in charcoal’. Every time I put this dress on, I feel amazing. It is my go-to dress for any evening event and has made many appearances!

What is your top tip for choosing the right outfit?
Always go for clothing that gives you confidence and feels right. Style should appear effortless and when people start to compliment you, you’ll know straight away that you have a winner. The woman who is always noticed in a room, is the one who is quietly confident – I believe beautiful, classic clothing is the key to this.
