Meet the Makers: cool plywood art from Maker Studio
She had a background in retail and marketing, he was an architect and designer, but together, Kati Williams and Rory Morgan combined their love for modern and classic design to start Maker Studio. Now they create typographic plywood art and clever flat-pack stools, turning their passion into a full-time venture. Kati took out some time to speak with us about her some of her favourite things: plywood, blueberry pancakes and a 1992 4WD van…
What do you love about working with plywood?
Plywood is great! It’s sustainable, it’s strong, it’s easy to work with, and it still has a natural look and feel even though it is man made.
Which is your favourite product?
We are really excited about the new bespoke wedding boards. I had quite a few requests for personalised options and noticed lots of our customers buying the quote boards as wedding gifts, so I put the two together and designed three boards for the range.
What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?
Our new (but old) 1992 4WD van. All of our friends and family think it’s hilarious, but is SO vital for picking up all our materials and transporting furniture.
What’s the best thing about living in Noosa Heads?
Besides the obvious perks of gorgeous beaches and a relaxed lifestyle, we get to work outside two days a week all year around at the Eumundi markets (located in the Noosa hinterland). The market environment is really supportive, and you can’t beat the honest feedback from the market shoppers!
What’s your favourite thing to ‘make’?
Organic blueberry pancakes and coffees on a Sunday morning. Sunday is our only day off in the week, so we always make sure we have a delicious breakfast planned.
Describe your design philosophy in three words.
Less is more.
