It’s always fun meeting new people, which is why we came up with the idea of The HTF Hot Seat – a regular post to introduce you to the creative dynamites behind some of your favourite hardtofind products. This week’s seller in the spotlight: super-talented illustrator Jessie Miles from In The Daylight (pictured above with her husband and two gorgeous pups!).
I’m known on hardtofind for my… illustrated prints and wooden hangers, greeting cards, canvas gift bags and wine bags.
Right now I’m inspired by… the simplicity of everyday objects – glass jars, tea cups, succulents. I love natural colour tones and minimal design.
My favourite part of the making process is… seeing my work in 3D on a card, print or gift bag. I illustrate and hand letter all of our designs, and being able to hold my designs in my hand makes it tangible and very rewarding.
I work from… a small studio in the inner west of Brisbane. It is a sweet little space with white walls, timber floorboards and lots of natural light.
A typical day for me involves… dragging myself out of bed (I am not a morning person!) and heading into the office. There I check emails and reply to customers, manufacturers, wholesalers and suppliers. I have just hired a lovely assistant who packs all our orders and keeps the studio running so I can focus my energy on developing new products lines and illustrating fresh new designs.
My proudest business moment was… being featured in Home Beautiful magazine. It has been my all-time favourite mag for years now and to see my own product in its pages was surreal and amazing.
When I started my business, I wish I’d known… networking is not a big scary word as my university teacher would have me believe. I used to imagine ‘networking’ as going to a function and throwing my business cards at as many people as I could. It is really just about creating authentic relationships with all sorts of different people and having an exchange of knowledge and support. I have so many contacts now I didn’t even realise I was making. The more friendly and open you are with sharing your knowledge, the more people you meet do the same. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and learn from people who are willing to teach you.
I’d describe my personal style as… understated with a neutral colour palette (just like my designs). I don’t like a lot of colour or busy elements. My house is very white with pops of colour in the art work and homewares. I have two Samoyeds (big white fluffy dogs) and their fur is much harder to spot when everything I own is white – which makes my house look much cleaner than it actually is!
My last purchase was… a beach tent. We love going to the beach and needed a new umbrella. I spotted these on Instagram and had to have one. They are so easy to put up and give us loads of shade.
The first thing I do when I wake up is… have a big glass of water and let my dogs out into the yard (they have to sleep inside at night as they like to lick cane toads, which makes them high and potentially very sick).
The motto I live by is… I’ve just come across this quote by Banksy and I love it: “If you get tired, learn to rest, not to quit.”
I’m hoping 2017 will bring… new designs, new products and new opportunities to sell our brand internationally. We also hope for a holiday as it has been years since my husband and I have been away on a break. We are thinking somewhere tropical and indulgent.
Everything tastes better with a little… coconut. I put that stuff on everything.
