Drop Earrings

6 items

Earrings are one of the very oldest types of jewellery. They’ve been found in the tombs of Ancient Egyptians and they’re talked about quite a lot in the Bible. One famous example in Exodus goes: So Aaron said to them, “Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf.”

During the Victorian era in 1800s England, ear piercing was considered uncouth and not something that so-called ‘nice girls’ did. This opinion oddly endured right through the first half of the 20th century. But by the swinging ’60s, pierced earrings were back in fashion, more flamboyant than ever, and earrings have been a mainstay of the jewellery scene ever since.

When it comes to earrings, the drop earring is probably the most popular iteration. Who hasn’t been through the make-your-own-earrings phase — poring over beads and tiny bits of metal, until we realise it’s best left to the experts? The scope and sheer versatility of design and price means there are drop earrings to suit every person, every occasion and every budget. A drop earring is simply defined as one that ‘drops’ below the earlobe. Mostly, drop earrings are simple studs with attachments such as gemstones, bead or charms hanging from them. At Hardtofind you’ll find a huge range of drop earrings to match your mood, from the timeless classics to the decidedly decorative.

Classic drop earrings

Simple drop earrings are a go-to day or night. Often featuring a pretty gemstone or simply a drop of precious metal — think classic gold drop earrings, pretty rose gold drop earrings or simple silver drop earrings — they work for every look, from night-time glam to office chic. Small drop earrings featuring classic stones such as pearls or opals will go with any outfit on any occasion.

Buying drop earrings as a gift

Drop earrings make an excellent gift for a friend, family member or loved one. If you’re not sure what style of drop earrings to buy, a good place to start is with the recipient’s birthstone. At Hardtofind you can buy beautiful pearl drop earrings (June), aquamarine (March), peridot (August), emerald (May) and amethyst (February) to name but a few. Gemstone drops are a great way to add colour and subtle sparkle to an outfit. They're beautiful, timeless, and can be worn every day.

Another way to make the gift of drop earring extra special is by personalising them to the recipient. Gift personalisation is easy, and it’s never been easier to make your gift of drop earrings one of a kind. You can have simple drop earrings personalised with your giftee’s initials, or buy drop earrings that are in the shape of the first letter of their name. Or check out the drop earrings in a personalised gift box, where you can have a message delivered with your gift that is perfect for the occasion. When searching for your personalised stud earrings at Hardtofind, check the ‘Can be personalised’ box in Special features.)
TIP: If the person you’re buying for has a treasured collection of earrings, you could consider buying a jewellery stand, box or wall hanging, so they can keep their favourite pairs on display around the clock.

Drop earrings for sensitive ears

If your ears get red and itchy when you wear earrings, it most likely means you’re allergic to one of the metals in the posts — that’s the bit that goes through the piercing. The most common metal allergy is to nickel, and it’s possible to develop an allergy where once there was none. If this sounds like you, look out for hypo-allergenic earrings made from surgical steel or titanium. Sterling silver is also a safe bet, as are high carat gold and rose gold earrings (beware white gold earrings that do contain nickel.) If your ears still get irritated, then it’s something other than nickel that’s causing it, and finding out what will be down to trial and error.
