There is a fence in Australia 5614 Kilometres long! You've heard of people putting up fences to keep their dogs in right? Well this one was erected to keep the dogs out. Built in the 1880s the Dingo fence was to protect sheep in the South East of Australia. The fence runs through some of the harshest parts of Australia from Jimbour (QLD) to Nundroo (SA). To date the fence has proven quite successful with only a few holes and minimal sightings of dingos on the other side.
In 1907 another fence was installed also to protect pastural areas, this time a rabbit fence. Rabbits were introduced to Australia on the First Fleet as food. The rabbit proof fence (indeed 3 fences) stretches 3256km across Western Australia. This fence proved unsuccessful, in the 1950s the Myxoma virus was introduced causing Myxomatosis
