Some versions trace the Rummy origins to the Spanish game "Conquian", brought to America by the Spanish communities to immigrate west.

Another reason for the Rummy games' popularity is believed to result from the great depression period, when people did not have many financial resources to engage in outdoors entertainment activity, and turned for some indoors quality time with family and friends.
